University of Toronto Press, Toronto (.), 1994. Reprint 1st ed.1962. (III),152p. Paperback. Right upper corner slightly dog's eared. 'This book is not, and does not claim to be, a full history of the development of medieval political thought. For so ambitious a work a limit of 150 pages would plainly be insufficient. But we have here an admirably clear and thoughtful account of the most important phases in that development; and the account is all the more welcome for being written in a very pleasing and readable style. As s general introduction to a subject which has attracted the attention of many able scholars, more particularly in the past fifty of sixty years, it could hardly be bettered.' (AUBREY GWYNN in An Irish Quarterly Review, 1958, p.335).

In den WarenkorbZustand: Gut. 151 Seiten / p. sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - Morrall takes as his field the reflections of political reality in contemporary thought from the decline of the Roman Empire to the early sixteenth century. In categories which have become traditional-the conflict between the Empire and its Barbarian invaders - he explores the implications of the crisis of late antiquity as a crisis also for all who reflected on power, justice, and legitimacy Within the large sweep of his account he concentrates on three central themes. First, he traces throughout the millennium (and more) the often stormy relations between the lay and clerical powers, between the regnum or imperium and the church or papacy, culminating in the sweeping claims of the late medieval papacy to a virtually universal lordship. Second, he explores, in part as the legacy and historical memory of the ancient Roman Empire, the architectonics of universal monarchy, whose most eloquent - and famous - exponent was Dante. Finally, he devotes several central chapters to the emergence of the State, especially from the twelfth century to the fourteenth, and thereby illuminates the most important heritage for the modem world of medieval political practice and speculation. Throughout, the unique character of medieval political thought receives constant attention, as thinkers sought to reconcile the obligations of power and authority with the mandate of the Christian religion, and as they succeeded, late in this development, in imagining fully secular governing institutions.
