Zustand: Gut. VII, 244 Seiten / p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - Dena Goodman here offers a fresh explanation of how critical theory broke out of the mold of an earlier tradition of discoursethe mirror for princes genreand shaped its own course in the eighteenth century. Criticism in Action provides a historical analysis of French Enlightenment texts as actions, and as the focus of critical activity in which writers and their potential readers participate. Goodman approaches texts as forces that shape the thinking and acting of the individuals engaged in the act of reading and presents new interpretations of three major Enlightenment texts by Montesquieu, Rousseau, and Diderot. -- Goodman considers key texts reflecting the eighteenth-century preoccupation with the crisis in contemporary society and politics. She contends that in their approach to political criticism, these works can be seen as part of a common project that derives from a single problem: how to write political criticism for a public rather than for a prince. Goodman shows how Montesquieus Persian Letters, the first attempt to address this problem, aims to develop the readers critical faculties while criticizing the absolutist system of church and state during the Regency. She then examines Rousseaus Discourse on Inequality, finding that Rousseaus critique of modern society is less radical than Diderots response to it in the Supplement to Bougainvilles Voyage. Through a provocative discussion of Diderots Supplement, she demonstrates that the radical project of the Enlightenment was to remake society by transforming the reader and the reading public. Her analyses demonstrate that these texts are works of criticism in the fullest sense of the term: they are experiments in the manner of writing criticism, and view criticism itself as an object of critical activity. -- Historians of eighteenth-century France, intellectual historians, especially those concerned with questions of method, scholars of French literature and of the Enlightenment, and political theorists will find Criticism in Action illuminating and provocative reading.
