This is all the more surprising since the sure decorative sense with which he worked, the ability to project figures in space and to combine a range of different motifs on one sheet, reveal Veronese as one of the great draughtsmen of the sixteenth century. This is the first catalogue to be devoted solely to Veronese's drawings. In his introduction, Dr Cocke relates Veronese's commitment to drawing to contemporary art theory and shows how the artist moved away from Titian's method of working directly on canvas and adopted the Central Italian practice of preparing compositions with drawings. Then, in the main part of the book over 150 surviving autograph drawings, including a previously unpublished group in a private collection and a striking group recently acquired by the Louvre, are illustrated and discussed in detail.
