Spencer Dunmore was a noted novelist before this work, his first foray into non-fiction writing, in 1991, which resulted in the critically acclaimed bestseller Reap the Whirlwind: The Untold Story of 6 Group, Canada's Bomber Force of World War II, which he co-wrote with William Carter, Ph.D. His first novel, Bomb Run, was an instant hit, and a string of novels followed, including Tower of Strength, Collision, Final Approach, and No Holds Barred. His works have been translated into many languages and published in more than fifteen countries. Dr. Carter earned his doctorate in military history from McMaster University. His doctoral thesis was on 6 Group and has been published by Garland Publishing of New York. No. 6 Group RCAF was a group of Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) heavy bomber squadrons in Europe during the Second World War, between 1942 and 1945. The group operated out of airfields in Yorkshire, England. Canadian bomber squadrons began participating in the war effort in 1941 and were attached to RAF Bomber Command groups. Canada, however, wanted its own identifiable presence in Allied air operations overseas, and it did not want its air force to be merely a source of manpower for the Royal Air Force. To this end, 6 (RCAF) Group was formed on 25 October 1942 with eight squadrons. At the peak of its strength, 6 Group consisted of 14 squadrons. Fifteen squadrons would eventually serve with the group, which was almost every RCAF heavy bomber squadron.
