Inscription (Not sure who signed it)-inscription to Linda or Linde reads" From the Lighthouse Historical Encampment". Editor Tim Harrison, editor of Lighthouse Digest, issued the first number in May, 1992. Ray Jones wrote The Lighthouse Encyclopedia, which is considered the definitive reference on these maritime beacons and coastal icons. The history of lighthouse technology parallels the expansion of commerce in the United States as well as around the world. There was a technology focus on the development of optics and fog signals, aids to navigation, including buoys and daymarks, and ever changing advances in marine safety. The importance of lightships in marking dangerous shoals and the role lighthouse tenders played in supplying hundreds of lighthouses are part of the lighthouse story. Modern technology has doomed the classic lighthouse. The Coast Guard, in its role as custodian, has automated all light stations in this country and, in the process, has eliminated the need for operating personnel. In selected cases, the Coast Guard is licensing some formerly manned and discontinued light stations to qualified groups. Many of the light stations considered no longer functional have been transferred to various states, counties or nonprofit groups and are now serving as museums, bed-and-breakfast inns or youth hostels.
