Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: very good. First Printing. 239, [1] pages. Index. Signed by the author. Helen Amelia Thomas (August 4, 1920 - July 20, 2013) was an American reporter and author best known for her longtime membership in the White House press corps. She covered the White House during the administrations of ten U.S. presidents-from the start of the Kennedy administration to the second year of the Obama administration. Thomas worked for the United Press and its successor United Press International (UPI) for 57 years, as a correspondent, and later as White House bureau manager. She served as a columnist for Hearst Newspapers from 2000 to 2010, writing on national affairs and the White House. Thomas was the first female officer of the National Press Club, the first female member/president of the White House Correspondents' Association and the first female member of the Gridiron Club. She wrote six books. Thomas retired from Hearst Newspapers and then served as an columnist for the Falls Church News-Press until February 2012. Derived from a Kirkus review: Nine American presidents appear with less majesty but more humanity in this light but slight series of anecdotes and jokes from former UPI White House bureau chief and Hearst syndicated columnist Thomas. In sparring with the press, a kind of political vaudeville becomes the weapon of choice for presidents, first ladies, children, and aides, the author avers. Each chief executive had his particular brand of humor, though she allows that Nixon's and Carter's were in noticeably short supply. Kennedy and Reagan were the best at using jocularity to defuse the acrimony often spawned by their policies. LBJ's earthy humor often relied on his peerless gift for mimicry. Ford had the heartiest laugh, while Clinton could take joshing and give it back. The two George Bushes, she observes, inspired as much unintentional as intentional humor.…

Helen Amelia Thomas (August 4, 1920 - July 20, 2013) was an American author and news service reporter, member of the White House press corps and opinion columnist. She worked for the United Press and post-1958 successor United Press International (UPI) for 57 years, first as a correspondent, and later as White House bureau manager. She was a columnist for Hearst Newspapers from 2000 to 2010, writing on national affairs and the White House. She covered the administrations of eleven U.S. presidents, from the final years of the Eisenhower administration to the second year of the Obama administration. Thomas was the first female officer of the National Press Club, the first female president of the White House Correspondents' Association and the first female member of the Gridiron Club. She wrote 6 books; her last, with co-author Craig Crawford, was Listen Up, Mr. President: Everything You Always Wanted Your President to Know and Do. The dean of the White House press corps presents a vivid and personal chronicle of the American presidency. Currently a columnist for Hearst and a former White House bureau chief for UPI, Helen Thomas has covered an astounding nine presidential administrations -- from Kennedy through George W. Bush -- endearing herself with her trademark "Thank you, Mr. President" at the conclusion of White House press conferences. Here, in a riveting chapter for each administration she has covered, Thomas delights, informs, spins yarns, and offers opinions on the commanders in chief and their families. She tells about Kennedy's love of sparring with the press, the memorable invitation LBJ extended to Hubert Humphrey to become his running mate, and Reagan's down-home ways of avoiding the press's tougher questions. As entertaining and compelling as Helen Thomas herself, Thanks for the Memories, Mr. President is a unique glimpse into presidential history. …
