Suitable field guides are recommended and the best use of binoculars and telescopes is explained. An important chapter describes the natural history of the fresh-water species and raises some interesting questions about characteristic behaviour which is easily observed. Many lines of enquiry are suggested as worthwhile projects for the birdwatcher, together with advice on how to get involved in the national wildfowl count scheme and other surveys run by bodies such as the Wildwfowl Trust.
