The author concentrates on the careers, following the end of the Brotherhood, of the three principal Pre-Raphaelites, who were strikingly dissimilar as artists and men: the rigidly uncompromising Holman Hunt; the enormously popular John Everett Millais; and the fascinating independent Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Primarily the story of 'three lives', the book also traces the course of the Pre-Raphaelitism during the middle and late Victorian years when it was not sustained as a formal organization, and it presents a vivid picutre of an inportant and colourful era in British art. Among the secondary figures the most important and ubiquitous is John Ruskin, who exerted a pervasive influence on Pre-Raphaelitism, and on each of the three principal lives.
