Good condition overall.; The pleasures of life in Japanese cities during the Edo period (1600-1868) were captured in popular prints and paintings known as Ukiyo-e, 'pictures of the floating world'. The woodblock prints have been collected and appreciated in the West for more than a century, but far less well known are the highly refined brush paintings on silk and paper scrolls and screens which were produced in much smaller quantities by the same artists, often to special commission. Even more than the prints, Ukiyo-e paintings concentrate on the world of the courtesan and geisha: other subjects include theatrical scenes, outdoor pastimes and landscapes. The British Museum's collections contain over 200 paintings of the Ukiyo-e school, including works by masters such as Utamaro, Hokusai and Moronobu. All are reproduced in colour in this book, with details of signatures and seals, biographies of the artists and an annotated bibliography. In the two introductory essays Timothy Clark discusses the development and aesthetic qualities of Ukiyo-e painting and examines problems of authenticity.
