How British politics moved from the rage of party of Queen Anne's last months to the stable oligarchy of the final years of George II is explained in this volume. In pursuit of its theme, this history is concerned with a much broader spectrum than Westminster and the activities of central government: political life was not confined to the few hundred families who monopolized seats in parliament. The author discusses the development of the 'Country' opposition to the 'Court' and suggests that the unreformed electoral system was more 'democratic' than it seems.
