In 1714, Englishmen were divided into two political parties, tory and whig; by 1760, this rift was no longer fundamental and the fusion of rival elites had created a ruling class which was to preserve itself in power through the revolutionary times ahead. How British politics moved from the rage of party of Queen Anne's last months to the stable oligarchy of the final years of George II is explained in this volume. In pursuit of its theme, this history is concerned with a much broader spectrum than Westminster and the activities of central government: political life was not confined to the few hundred families who monopolized seats in parliament. The author discusses the development of the 'Country' opposition to the 'Court' and suggests that the unreformed electoral system was more 'democratic' than it seems. This book examines the stuff of national politics in a constitutional, social, economic and religious context. Contemporaries believed that these elements of their society were inextricably linked, for the constitution in church and state guaranteed both liberty and prosperity and gave 'the kingdom a lustre above other nations'.
