Tras finalizar sus estudios, Keats se convirtió en aprendiz de cirujano y se licenció como farmacéutico. Sin embargo, la poesía dominó cada vez más como su principal interés. Comenzó a moverse en círculos poéticos y artísticos, contando entre sus amigos y conocidos a Leigh Hunt, Benjamin Haydon, Charles Lamb y Percy Bysshe Shelley, y no tardó en publicar su poesía con regularidad. A pesar de la admiración que le profesaban las figuras literarias contemporáneas, los críticos no fueron tan favorables y, en vida, la mayor parte de su poesía fue objeto de duras críticas. Tras perder a su madre y a su hermano a causa de la tuberculosis, Keats conoció los signos de la enfermedad cuando él también sucumbió. Enviado a Italia por sus médicos para recuperarse, nunca regresó y murió en Roma con sólo 26 años. Su poesía inspiró a Tennyson y Browning, y el pintor prerrafaelita lo situó a la altura de Dante, Homero, Chaucer y Goethe.
