Tras perder a su madre y a su hermano a causa de la tuberculosis, Keats conoció los signos de la enfermedad cuando él también sucumbió. Enviado a Italia por sus médicos para recuperarse, nunca regresó y murió en Roma con sólo 26 años. Su poesía inspiró a Tennyson y Browning, y el pintor prerrafaelita lo situó a la altura de Dante, Homero, Chaucer y Goethe.
