It has many roots, and the deepest and most sustaining of these has been in the civilizations of the Mediterranean. There seems to have been no time when England has not been in touch with the civilizations of Greece and Italy; even Stonehenge, the most dramatic survivor from our remotest past, has a carved dagger of Mycenean pattern among its ornaments. England first enters recorded history as part of the Roman Empire, and after two centuries of Gothic obscurity re-emerges under the Europeanizing cloak of the Roman Church. For the Victorians, also, Greece and Italy evinced a strong attraction, even though nineteenth-century Italy must have represented everything they found most repugnant.
