His reign marks a watershed in that shadowy period during which the ancient world became the medieval world, and Gregory himself fascinatingly embodies all the contradictions and implications of that watershed. A devoted adherent of the Eastern Roman Empire, he nevertheless considerably advanced the power and prestige of the papacy in both Rome itself and the West in general, thus anticipating the time when the papacy came to inherit the mantle of the old Roman Empire. -- This study, the first in English since 1912, revises the traditional picture of Pope Gregory in the light of all the research that has taken place since that time. It looks at his achievements in various fields, and describes how he organized both the central and estate administration of the papacy. He waged unremitting war on heresy and schism, and was Responsible for sending out the mission which converted the Anglo-Saxons of England. Gregory also pioneered a new western pastoral tradition in learning, popularized and promoted monasticism, and supervised and trained the Italian episcopate. -- Jeffrey Richards points out that Gregory was both a Christian and a Roman, a conservative and a pioneer, and just as his reign looked forward to a medieval world of monastic orders, emergent states and a monarchical papacy, it also looked back to a vanishing world of imperial order, discipline and unity, in which Roman church and Roman Empire were one and undivided.
