Lord Russell first became interested in Henry of Naarre through his frequent visits to Pau, Lady Russell's family home. Henry IV was born in Pau in 1553. On his mother's death in 1572 he became King of Navarre and married Margaret de Valois, sister of Charles IX of France. No King of France has been more popular than 'Henry the Great'. He was amiable, quick-witted, benevolent and generally indulgent. He was courageous almost to the point of being reckless. He had numerous love affairs, of which the most famous are those with Gabrielle d'Elstrees and Henriette d'Entragnes. He died in 1610.
