Zustand: Gut. XVII, 131 S. plus 435 Abb, auf Tafeln. Umschlag leicht berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - The regional capital of the western quadrant of the Late Classic Maya world, Palenque reached sculptural and architectural heights never attained by any other Maya center. This is the third volume of Merle Greene Robertson's photographic series on the site, which will provide the sole complete record of Palenque as it was before recent damage by volcanic ash and acid rain. Containing hundreds of illustrations in each volume, including many color photographs as well as black-and-white photographs and drawings, the work will be the first complete study of color in a Maya site. This third volume records the period of the late Palace buildings, when Palenque produced some of the finest sculpture ever created in the Maya world. The author tells the history of the kings and queens who controlled the building of the late Palace structures, and who, generation after generation, improved the quality and technical craftsmanship of the art. She discusses the various innovations of the late Palace period and also her findings that Palenque sculptors often built their figures in layers of stucco applied to armatures and dressed them by building up each layer of clothing separately, and that color followed iconographic coding throughout the site.
