Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. 261, [3] pages. Inscribed by the author on the title page. Inscription reads For David---Joe W. Haldeman. DJ is in a plastic sleeve. When Nicholas Foley, a Boston psychology professor and deep cover Soviet agent, develops a mind control device, he becomes a target for both the KGB and CIA. Joe William Haldeman (born June 9, 1943) is an American science fiction author. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Maryland in 1967. He was immediately drafted into the United States Army, where he served as a combat engineer in the Vietnam War. He was wounded in combat and received a Purple Heart. In 1975, he received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop. He is best known for his novel The Forever War (1974). That novel and other works, including The Hemingway Hoax (1991) and Forever Peace (1997), have won science fiction awards, including the Hugo Award and Nebula Award. He was awarded the SFWA Grand Master for career achievements. In 2012 he was inducted as a member of the Science Fiction Hall of Fame. Many of Haldeman's works, including his debut novel War Year and his second novel The Forever War, were inspired by his experiences in the Vietnam War. Wounded in combat, he struggled to adjust to civilian life after returning home. From 1983 to 2014, he was a professor teaching writing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Derived from an article in the Library Journal: Nicholas Foley appears to be an ordinary American psychology professor. He is, in fact, a Russian spy, inserted into the United States after World War II, joining the American army, attending American universities, falling in love and marrying an American, but always in touch with his Soviet superiors. For two decades he has bided his time, improving his security clearances, waiting for the big assignment. All he ever does in the way of spying is turn in the names of people who might be ''turned.'' But then he makes his momentous discovery. He isolates an ultrasonic frequency that causes anyone within earshot to do whatever he is told. Foley is forced into action when his cover is blown by a routing CIA investigation. A few demonstrations send both the Russians and the Americans after Foley with a vengeance. His quiet life is disrupted in a maelstrom of violence as hostile agents from both superpowers try first to find him and then, at any cost, to destroy him. Eluding both, Foley uses his tool to strike a blow for world peace, as envisioned by a Sixties hippie, his wife. A carefully paced thriller. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].
