The format is approximately 5.75 inches by 8.5 inches. 220 pages. Slight wear to DJ edges. Inscribed by the author on the title page. The inscription reads To Bill & Hillary Best Regards from :Hardball" Land Chris Matthews Nov 2001 [!!!*****] The host of MSNBC's Hardball shares his iconoclastic views on American politics, culture, and society in a collection of essays and observations on today's hottest issues and the people in the news, including Clinton, Gore, and Bush. Christopher John Matthews (born December 17, 1945) is an American political commentator, retired talk show host, and author. Matthews hosted his weeknight hour-long talk show, Hardball with Chris Matthews, on America's Talking and later on MSNBC, from 1997 until March 2, 2020. He announced on his final episode that he was retiring, On that occasion, he stated: "The younger generation's out there ready to take the reins. We see them in politics, in media, in fighting for their causes. They're improving the workplace. Matthews served on the staffs of four Democratic Members of Congress, including Senators Frank Moss and Edmund Muskie. Matthews was a presidential speechwriter during the Carter Administration, and later worked for six years as Chief of Staff to longtime Speaker of the House of Representatives Tip O'Neill, playing a direct role in many key political battles with the Reagan Administration. Matthews worked in print media for 15 years, spending 13 years as Washington, D.C., bureau chief for the San Francisco Examiner (1987-2000) and two years as a syndicated columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle. Derived from a Kirkus review: Hardball host and syndicated columnist Matthews serves up another helping of his political pronouncements. Matthews shares his average-Joe perspective. Weighing the events of the last presidential election, he believes Bush won the election, despite the pundits who thought Gore prevailed in the third debate, because ordinary people saw Bush as "a man with the sun in his face" (like Reagan and Kennedy) and not a desk-jockey bound to the Oval Office like Gore. Even so, he says here that Gore will run again, while Bush has no "apparent national mission" or "quickening rhythm" and runs "a presidency without parades." Matthews has a problem with Bill Clinton because our boomer-generation Chief Executive had no "anti-Communist fervor, and none of the awe for the presidency which he found so easy to win." Matthews is on firm ground describing the recent unveiling of a statue to FDR, calling it a mistake that conveys little sense of the hope he brought to the country: FDR's real monument, the pundit asserts, is "the Social Security system that he insisted be financed by workers and employers alike." Matthews hits home most strongly describing his travels and the AIDS epidemic in Africa. Derived from a Publishers Weekly article: Chris Matthews was a speechwriter for President Carter before he became the opinionated host of Hardball with Chris Matthews. In Now, Let Me Tell You What I Really Think, his third book, the author does just that. Matthews writes a lot of stories about politics and politicians, a few personal reflections and an energetic, forceful push toward getting everything all out. For those who would skim, the author provides section summaries under the heading "Here's What I Really Think." But one suspects Matthews hasn't written down all his secrets yet.
