Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. First Printing [Stated]. 25 cm, 306, notes, index. Inscribed by the author ("Marvin"). Marvin Leonard Kalb (born June 9, 1930) is an American journalist. Kalb was the founding director of the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy and Edward R. Murrow Professor of Press and Public Policy from 1987 to 1999. The Shorenstein Center and the Kennedy School are part of Harvard University. He is currently a James Clark Welling Fellow at George Washington University. He is a guest scholar in Foreign Policy at the Brookings Institution. Kalb spent 30 years as an award-winning reporter for CBS News and NBC News. Kalb was the last newsman recruited by Edward R. Murrow to join CBS News, becoming part of the later generation of the "Murrow Boys." His work at CBS landed him on Richard Nixon's "enemies list". At NBC, he served as chief Diplomatic Correspondent and host of Meet the Press. Kalb, has won two Peabody Prizes, the Edward R. Morrow Award, and other awards. Derived from a Kirkus review: A veteran journalist examines the behavior of the press during the initial days of the Lewinsky scandal-and finds much to condemn. Kalb has the credentials to command attention: 30 years as a respected TV newsman and now a worried citizen who holds to the fire the feet of his former colleagues. . After exploring the genesis of the scandal, he zeroes in on 13 days: Jan. 13-25, 1998. He tells what stories the major newspapers ran; he summarizes the news hours and talk shows. He drags the principals under the unforgiving lens of his moral microscope: Michael Isikoff, Matt Drudge, Rush Limbaugh, Lucianne Goldberg, Linda Tripp, the Starr prosecutors, William Ginsburg, and even media notables like Tim Russert and Ted Koppel. Kalb is not so much interested in what happened as in how it was reported, and he sees disturbing tendencies: going with stories merely because they are "out there"; rushing to judgment; blurring the lines between journalism and politics; and eschewing the two-source tradition. Stinging often lyrical, Kalb excoriates those who have diminished the profession he loves.
