Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. First Edition. First Printing. 398, [2] pages. Illustrations. Notes. Bibliography. Documents. Index, Signed by the author on the fep. The first comprehensive biography of Madeleine Korbel Albright, this objective yet deeply personal portrait of the first female Secretary of State draws on nearly 200 interviews and exhaustive historical research to tell her story. Ann Blackman is an author and a journalist. Blackman received a diplome from the Sorbonne in 1967 and a B.A. from the University of Connecticut in 1968. Blackman was a news correspondent for more than 30 years. She spent 16 years with Time, joining the magazine in 1985 as deputy bureau chief in the Washington bureau. She also spent three years as a foreign correspondent in Time's Moscow bureau. Before that, Blackman was a reporter for the Associated Press with assignments that included the Watergate hearings, presidential politics, the Iranian hostage crisis and the assassination attempts on Governor George Wallace and President Ronald Reagan. Blackman's books include: Off To Save the World, How One Woman Made A Difference. She is also the author of Seasons Of Her Life, a biography of Madeleine K. Albright, the first women to become U.S. secretary of state; co-author of The Spy Next Door, about the secret life of FBI turncoat Robert Hanssen; and author of Wild Rose, A True Story, about the remarkable life of Civil War spy Rose O'Neal Greenhow, who spied for the South during the American Civil War. Blackman has appeared on TV and radio shows including A&E Biography, Washington Week, CNN, Fox Morning News, and Charlie Rose Show. Derived from a Kirkus review: A serious biography. Blackman, a seasoned journalist, focuses on the life of a public figure. This is a balanced, penetrating look at Albright as a person. Blackman acknowledges Albright's considerable accomplishments without making her into a saint, exposing qualities that have helped her succeed. In Blackman's hands, Albright appears driven and shrewd, talented and caring about others, and above all an expert networker at home in the image-conscious late 20th century. The first Albright biography worth reading. Derived from an article in Publishers Weekly: In the first biography of America's only female secretary of state, Blackman not only tells the life of a Czech refugee who becomes the highest-ranking woman in the U.S. government, but also weaves together three distinct subjects: the turbulent history of Czechoslovakia, the effect of the feminist movement on women of Albright's generation and the foreign policy process in the Carter and Clinton administrations. The daughter of a Czech diplomat, young Madeleine twice fled her native Prague, after the German invasion of 1939 and the Communist coup of 1948. Albright quickly adjusted to her new home in the U.S., graduating from Wellesley in 1959 and marrying publishing heir Joseph Albright. Albright was also an academic and a "Washington lady," serving on boards and hosting dinner parties. After she made a name for herself as the U.S.'s plainspoken, media-savvy ambassador to the UN, Clinton appointed her as secretary of state. She remains one of the most compelling figures in the Clinton administration. Albright herself gave one interview to the author, while many of her friends and associates cooperated as well. Blackman is a skillful reporter who has written a solid, balanced biography. Her subject emerges as strong and determined. Madeleine Jana Korbel Albright (born Marie Jana Körbelová, later Korbelová; May 15, 1937 March 23, 2022) was an American diplomat and political scientist who served as the 64th United States secretary of state under President Bill Clinton from 1997 to 2001. She was the first woman to hold the position. Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, Albright immigrated to the United States after the 1948 communist coup d'état when she was eleven years old. Her father, diplomat Josef Korbel, settled the family in Denver, Colorado, and she became a U.S. citizen in 1957. Albright graduated from Wellesley College in 1959 and earned a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1975, writing her thesis on the Prague Spring. She worked as an aide to Senator Edmund Muskie from 1976 to 1978, before serving as a staff member on the National Security Council under Zbigniew Brzezinski. She served in that position until 1981 when President Jimmy Carter left office. After leaving the National Security Council, Albright joined the academic faculty of Georgetown University in 1982 and advised Democratic candidates regarding foreign policy. Following the 1992 presidential election, Albright helped assemble President Bill Clinton's National Security Council. She was appointed United States ambassador to the United Nations from 1993 to 1997, a position she held until her elevation as secretary of state. Secretary Albright served in that capacity until President Clinton left office in 2001. Albright served as chair of the Albright Stonebridge Group, a consulting firm, and was the Michael and Virginia Mortara Endowed Distinguished Professor in the Practice of Diplomacy at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in May 2012. Albright served on the board of the Council on Foreign Relations.…
