The Good Guys: How We Turned the FBI 'Roundand Finally Broke the Mob is a 1996 true-crime memoir by former FBI Special Agent Jules Bonavolonta and journalist Brian Duffy. It chronicles the FBI's shift fr…om bureaucratic box-checking to successful Mafia prosecution. Driven by the RICO statute and aggressive surveillance, Bonavolonta helped modernize the Federal Bureau of Investigation to systematically dismantle New York's major crime families, culminating in the 1990 takedown of John Gotti. Bonavolonta's career with the bureau began in May 1996, when he worked as an investigative specialist in the New York Field Office. His father was a special agent for the FBI and served for 24 years. In August 2000, he received his first assignment as a special agent in the New York Field Office, where he spent several years investigating the Bonanno La Cosa Nostra (LCN) Family. His work led to the convictions and guilty pleas of dozens of high-ranking members and associates of the Bonanno LCN Family. From 2006 to 2007, Bonavolonta served as the program manager in the Organized Crime Section at FBI headquarters. He also directed an international organized crime initiative with the Italian National Police to combat criminal operations between the American-based LCN families and the Sicilian Mafia. In 2008, he became a supervisory special agent of the corporate/securities fraud squad at the Newark Field Office in 2008. In 2013, Bonavolonta was named assistant special agent in charge of the Boston Field Office, from which he retired. Jules Bonavolonta is a highly decorated former FBI Special Agent who served the Bureau for 23 years, driving its modern war against organized crime. He famously supervised undercover agent Joe Pistone (the basis for Donnie Brasco). Brian Duffy is a three-time Pulitzer Prize Nominee who has held prestigious writing and editorial positions at NPR, US News and World Report, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal. He specializes in public affairs, domestic and international relations, and politics. He is the author of five books and the recipient of awards from Yale, Harvard, and the Overseas Press Club.
