Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition 1995. Bright, clean & tight hardcover, unread, in FINE condition. "In his first volume of new poetry in seven years, the recently deceased Merrill (winner of Pulitzer and Bollingen prizes as well as two National Book Awards) retur…ned to the short lyric and dramatic narrative forms that were overshadowed by his 1982 epic trilogy, The Changing Light at Sandover. This is a moving final collection, framed by the opening 'A Downward Look,' which begins, 'Seen from above, the sky/ is deep---' and the last, 'An Upward Look,' in which a 'departing occupier' has left a 'heart green acre.' Complicated forms and rhyme schemes hold a rein on emotion, even as the poet delights in playing with language. Merrill's ability to relate everything to the life of the Poet leads him to find---and demonstrate---significance on all fronts, whether grand, e.g., the diurnal rhythms in 'An Upward Look,' or trivial: an insurance investigator's insistence that a chimney be fixed before a fire is lit moves Merrill to consider his need to take risks in his work, and, later, to hazard merging into 'the hearth of a lover's eyes' ('Take Risks'). Here as everywhere, Merrill transforms the everyday into almost supernatural elegance. The poet's own words, more poignant with his death, confirm what critics have long contended: 'Eyes shut in all but visionary/ Consent, he lets the words reorganize/ Everything he lives for, until it all fits/ Or until he forgets them.'"---Publishers Weekly. "Because Merrill has found a way to put everything from murder to mindlessness into a style that could have been purely decorative, the style itself has stretched its possibilities with each succeeding volume. Just as the flat motifs that Matisse found in Muslim decorative art became ingredients, on his canvases, of striking atmospheres of sensation, so puns, ambiguities, and the stanzaic shapes of English expand and grow when they are incorporated into Merrill's handsomest and most ambitious poems."---Helen Vendler. Pristine hardcover w/brilliant corners & crisp edges, tight binding, intact NF jacket w/very slight crinkle on upper points, a beautiful Knopf production, quite presentable & collectible.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. First Edition. First Printing of Merrill's long dramatic sequence with voices, collected here in a single volume for the first time. Royal 8vo (237 x 145mm): [8],560,[4]pp, with errata slip laid in. Publisher's finely woven black cloth, upper cover with author's monogr…am and title in blind, spine lettered in copper, photographic end papers, top edge stained scarlet, pictorial dust jacket priced $25. Signed by Merrill (without inscription) at the half title and dated 1993. Virtually pristine, tight, square and bright: a superlative, unread example. Merrill's masterpiece (Mirabell won the National Book Award for Poetry, in 1978), a "postmodern apocalyptic epic" originally published in three volumes, from 1976 to 1980, then in this single-volume edition with a coda. With his partner, David Jackson, Merrill spent more than 20 years transcribing supernatural communications during séances using a Ouija board. He published his first Ouija board narrative cycle in 1976, with a poem for each letter of the alphabet, calling it The Book of Ephraim, which became the first part of this poetic trilogy. Ephraim is a control spirit who allows Merrill and Jackson to communicate with friends and family members who have passed on as well as with famous poets, including Wallace Stevens, W. B. Yeats, and W. H. Auden. The second part of the trilogy, Mirabell: Books of Number (1978), describes a dualistic universe in which godlike forces of good and evil contend; "Mirabell" is based on opposition and the tension opposites create. Scripts for the Pageant, the third part, focuses on attraction of opposites to stress how order can be brought from chaos. Scripts for the Pageant, the longest and most dazzling of the three volumes, covers such diverse topics as the writing of poetry, threat of nuclear war, destruction of the environment, death and reincarnation, and the role of the arts in a technological world. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.
