One of the most courageous, popular, and effective Senators of recent times tells how the Senate really works and doesn't work, and gives a rare insider's view of the people who run it. A hugely popular and universally trusted two-term Senator from New Hampshire, Rudman chose not to run for a third term when he decided that he could not reconcile his personal ideals with the limitations of today's legislative process. Warren Bruce Rudman (May 18, 1930 November 19, 2012) was an American attorney and politician who served as a United States Senator from New Hampshire from 1980 to 1993. A member of the Republican Party, he was known as a moderate centrist. After two terms in office, Rudman chose not to run for re-election in 1992. At the time of his death, he was a co-chair of Albright Stonebridge Group, as well as an advisory board member of Promontory Financial Group. In Combat: Twelve Years in the U.S. Senate Warren Rudman focuses on four historic Senate actions in which he played a central role: the Gramm-Rudman act--the audacious 1985 attempt to force a balanced budget on an unwilling Congress and President; the Keating Five ethics committee hearings, which revealed the thin line between campaign finance and corruption; the Iran-Contra investigation, Rudman's no-holds-barred account of the Reagan administration's biggest scandal; and the appointment of his colleague and close friend David Souter to the Supreme Court. Rudman offers vivid portraits of the men he worked with: Dole, Packwood, Baker, Helms, Gramm, and the two presidents he served under--Reagan and Bush. He writes unflinchingly about his colleagues and about the legislative process. Here is the inner world of the Senate club, revealed by the man who was often called "the conscience of the Senate." Combat is one of the most important books on American politics to be published in years. First edition. Stated. First printing per Random House printing convention.
