Kenneth Sydney Davis (September 29, 1912 - June 10, 1999) was a historian and university professor, most renowned for his series of biographies of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Davis also wrote biographies of Charles Lindbergh, Adlai Stevenson, and authored the first biography of General Dwight D. Eisenhower, entitled Dwight D. Eisenhower: Soldier of Democracy. During his varied career, Davis was a journalism instructor at New York University, a war correspondent attached to General Eisenhower's headquarters during World War II, a member of the UNESCO Relations Staff of the State Department, and a professor of history at both Kansas State and the University of Kansas. He also worked as speech writer for Presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson during the 1956 campaign. Derived from a review posted on-line: Davis, who died in June 1999, was in his usual excellent form with this last book in his five-volume portrait of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. His account is engrossing in its vibrant portraits of Roosevelt as war politician, diplomat and commander-in-chief. Davis skillfully narrates Roosevelt's subtle diplomacy before Pearl Harbor, when the president did an end run around isolationists by orchestrating what Davis describes as a "guided drift toward war." Later, Davis lets readers sit beside the commander-in-chief through Battles of the Coral Sea and Midway, the siege at Guadalcanal and the success of the invasion of French North Africa in November of 1942.
