Zustand: Fair. First Edition. This, the most interesting and helpful edition of Charles Darwin's major work, is now available in an inexpensive paperback edition. It is written with a clarity, forcefulness, and conciseness not found in any subsequent revision. For modern reading and for reference, it is the standard edition. It is now generally recognized that the publication of Darwin's Origin of Species in 1859 not only decisively altered the basic concepts of biological theory but had a profound and lasting influence on social, philosophic, and religious thought. This work is rightly regarded as one of the most important books ever printed.The first edition had a freshness and uncompromising directness that were considerably weakened in subsequent editions. Nearly all reprints were based on the greatly modified sixth edition (1872), and the only modern reprint changes pagination, making references to the original very difficult. Clearly, there has been a need for a facsimile reprint. Professor Mayr's introduction has a threefold purpose: to list passages in the first edition that Darwin altered in later editions; to point out instances in which Darwin was clearly pioneering; and to call attention to neglected passages that show Darwin as a much deeper thinker than has been recognized. Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Softcover with white wraps, black and blue lettering across covers and along spine. Uneven toning to front cover, appears to be around the edges of where an object was placed: a line of discoloration across center and one along the right side. No toning, even or not, across back cover or spine. Some rubbing at top right corner of front cover, right over printed price, seemingly where a sticker was placed. No damage to lettering, covers still glossy. No date on title page. Copyright page dated 1964. 513 pages. Former owner's initials written on front free endpaper, "LPB, Oct 92." Lincoln P. Brower was a noteworthy conservationist and butterfly expert. Pages are otherwise clean and bright. Binding is tight and secure. We've got a wonderful bookcase or two of books from Lincoln Brower's collection listed here. Everything you know about Monarch Butterflies, you know because of Brower's work, both scientific and outreach. He was a great teacher, an important researcher, a torch-bearing conservationist, and a leading light in lepidoptery. We are extremely excited to offer his books.
