Trade paperback. Zustand: Very good. First Printing [Stated]. 256 pages. Illustrations (some in color). Chronicle of Events. Discography. Bibliography. Cover has slight wear and soiling. The former press agent for the Beatles recreates the events and feelings of 1967, the year "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" was released…, capturing the psychedelic and religious explosion, the music, and the civil rights demonstrations. Derek Taylor (7 May 1932 - 8 September 1997) was an English journalist, writer, publicist and record producer. He is best known for his role as press officer to the Beatles, with whom he worked in 1964 and then from 1968 to 1970, and was one of several to earn the moniker "the Fifth Beatle". He worked as the publicist for California-based bands such as the Byrds, the Beach Boys and the Mamas and the Papas. He was equally dedicated to the 1967 Summer of Love ethos and helped stage that year's Monterey Pop Festival. Taylor started his career as a local journalist and became a North England-based writer for national British newspapers. He also served as a regular columnist and theatre critic for the Daily Express from 1952. During the 1970s, Taylor worked for Warner Bros. Records and then HandMade Films. The term "pocket symphony" is generally attributed to Taylor for his description of the Beach Boys' 1966 single "Good Vibrations". A trusted confidant of the Beatles, Taylor remained particularly close to George Harrison and maintained a friendship with John Lennon until the latter's murder in 1980. In addition to editing Harrison's 1980 autobiography, I, Me, Mine, Taylor authored books such as It Was Twenty Years Ago Today. In 1987, Taylor's It Was Twenty Years Ago Today celebrated the twentieth anniversary of the release of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It provides a detailed documentary of the people and events that shaped the album and the wider events of the Summer of Love counterculture. The book includes archive interviews and photographs as well as extensive transcripts from a Granada TV documentary, which was also titled It Was Twenty Years Ago Today and for which Taylor served as consultant. Derived from a Publishers Weekly article: A newspaper journalist and press agent for the Beatles and other groups, Taylor served as consultant for Granada Television's documentary celebration of 1967, which some consider the high point of the '60s counterculture. Here Taylor incorporates material from the TV show and presents interviews and quotations in which key people from the period, including Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Mick Jagger, Ken Kesey, Allen Ginsburg, Timothy Leary, Michelle Phillips and Hunter Thompson, remember the time. The sense of excitement about the possibility of change pervades the book, as Taylor discusses the Monterey Pop Festival, the rise of acid culture, be-ins, the impact of the Diggers and Marshall McLuhan, the psychedelic poster fad, protests and demonstrations, as well as trends in fashion, films, art, happenings and literature. And, as the title hints, Taylor devotes much space to the significance of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album. This is an exhilarating remembrance.
