He has a B.Sc. and M.Sc. from Rutgers University and a Ph.D. in high-energy particle physics from Columbia University. He joined the Physics Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1966 and has been associated with the Institute since that time. He is presently Director of the Program in Science & Technology for International Security, which he co-founded in 1977. In 1984 Tsipis received the American Physical Society Leo Szilard Award. In "Arsenal, understanding weapons in the nuclear age" a knowledgeable scientist, Kosta Tsipis, explains in layman's terms the physics and technology of nuclear weapons and their delivery systems. Dr. Tsipis explains how different types of nuclear bombs are constructed, how missiles find their target, the source and ultimate fate of radioactivity, the engineering problems relating to critical mass-and includes an in-depth discussion of the killing power of nuclear weapons, electromagnetic pulse, and the potential depletion of the ozone layer by nuclear bomb blasts.
