Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. A very good clean copy in a very good jacket. A definitive account of every bird species recorded on Lord Howe Island since its discovery in 1788. Hutton combines historical records, scientific studies, and his own long experience on the island to show how its birdlife has changed over more than two centuries. The book moves between extinct species, long?established breeding birds, and more recent arrivals, explaining how isolation, human settlement, and conservation efforts have shaped the island's ecology. Colour photographs and clear notes give each species a sense of place, while the wider narrative traces the environmental story of the island itself.

About the book >.>.> Lord Howe Island has fascinated scientists and naturalists since discovery in 1788. The bird life, in particular, has been a major attraction, with 14 species of seabirds and 18 species of landbirds breeding on the Island today. Man's impact on the Island has caused the extinction of a further 10 species which are, however, of great historic interest. Many species of migratory shore-birds visit briefly. Two major publications about the birds have been made-one in 1928 and the next in 1940. Both of these volumes were limited editions, and are not readily available today. This new book details and illustrates, for the first time, all breeding species, past and present. It also gives interesting details about the history of bird collecting, the use of birds by residents and notes on locations of breeding colonies. For the person interested in birds or nature in general it will provide fascinating reading about the birdlife of one of Australia's most interesting Islands. (LL).
