Hardback. Zustand: Good. An account of the activities of the French secret service since 1944, up to the sinking of the Greenpeace ship "Rainbow Warrior". The book makes extensive use of interviews and documentary material about the agents, spymasters and targets of a notoriously incompetent intelligence organisation. The headquarters of the French secret service in Paris is opposite La Piscine, the Tourelles swimming baths, and it is by this name that the Service de Documentation Extrieure et de Contre-Espionage (SDECE) is popularly known. Journalists Roger Faligot and Pascal Krop relate the extraordinary history of the French intelligence service from the liberation of Paris in 1944 to the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior in New Zealand in 1985. They make use of archives and documents hitherto closed to public scrutiny, in addition to numerous interviews with former agents and intelligence chiefs, who have never before spoken at length about their experiences. As a result, the book aims to provide a unique insight into the workings of a major secret service, revealing its failures as well as its successes, its structure, organization and key decision-makers. Its agents attempted to liberate Jews from concentration camps, organized opium traffic in Indo-China against Ho Chi-Minh and the CIA, and were involved in attempts to assassinate Presidents Ben Bella and Nasser. The original version of La Piscine won Le Prix du Livre d'Investigation awarded by La Fondation pour la Liberte de la Presse in 1985.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 288 pages. Provides insight into the workings of the French secret service, revealing it s successes and failures, its structure, key decision makers, and operations Ed itorial Reviews From Publishers Weekly The authors' superficial account of Fren ch secret-service activities over the past four decades unwittingly conjures up images of a bumbling Inspector Clouseau. Having gathered an enormous amount of m aterial, Faligot and Krop present it in an almost undigested state. An arch-riva lry with the American secret services is mentioned: Colonel Edward Lansdale, CIA ace of the 1950s, is said to have stirred up a plot against Cambodia's Prince S ihanouk but is foiled by the Service de Documentation Exterieure et de Contre-Es pionnage with the help of Chinese intelligence. How this was accomplished is not explained. Nor are the French authors forthcoming about postwar recruitment, tr aining or policy. Unexpectedly coherent is the final chapter, dealing with the b lundered 1985 sinking of the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior in New Zealand. But on the whole, readers will be befuddled, never sure whether the authors intend to inform, amuse, appall--or all three. Photos. Copyright 1989 Reed Business In formation, Inc. From Library Journal Two French journalists trace the history o f the French secret services (SDECE) from the liberation of Paris in 1944 to the sinking of the Greenpeace vessel The Rainbow Warrior in New Zealand in 1985. In a tumult of names, acronymns, and places, the authors provide brief accounts of the major events in which the SDECE is alleged to have been involved. From its use of former Nazi agents to assist in the Cold War, its debacles during the Fre nch colonial wars, and its continuing manipulation of former African colonies, S.…
