The first part of the book is historical, concerned first to describe the patterns of work of men and women in pre-industrial Britain, and then to show how these changed during and after the Industrial Revolution. The second part of the book presents and examines the results of six years' intensive research on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. The author carefully marshalls an enormous mass of evidence and data in order both to challenge fundamental notions on class, status, income and gender, and to show that conventional explanations of individual behaviour and social change need substantial revision.
