Dr. Edward Elisha Stonestreet (1830-1903) had a distinguished career as a community and family physician for over half a century, from 1852 until his death… in 1903. Through documents, photographs and other primary sources this book examines the life and career of this prominent local physician in the context of the 19th century world in which he lived. Edward Elisha Stonestreet (1830-1903) practiced medicine as a general family doctor in Rockville, Maryland, for 51 years beginning in 1852 and continuing until he died on his medical rounds in October 1903. He received his early education at the Rockville Academy, after which he undertook a medical apprenticeship with a local doctor. He then entered medical school and graduated in 1852. He first served as an apprentice to Dr. William B. Magruder for two years, from about mid-1848 through mid-1850. The standard for medical training of the day was that an aspiring physician would serve under the tutelage of an established physician and then attend medical lectures at a medical college or university. The established physician thus was the "preceptor" for the apprentice, who paid for the tutelage. While he was studying with Dr. Magruder, Edward Stonestreet also lived with Magruder on his Oakley farm in Olney, Maryland. Dr. Magruder was considered the best physician in the county. Clarence R. "Corky" Hickey, Jr. is an author, local historian, a former Army hospital medic during the Vietnam War Era, and retired federal employee. Dr. Stonestreet's became personally involved in the Civil War as a surgeon in the fall 1862. He served as one of Montgomery County's Examining Surgeons for the Union Army. from August through October 1862. He also served as an Acting Assistant Surgeon under contract with the Union Army, a position commonly referred to as "Contract Surgeon'', from September 1862 through June 1863. Dr. Stonestreet's medical service to the Army in 1862 and 1863 thus appears to have been in response to the needs of the Army Medical Department in the Washington area, as well as in direct service to the needs of a cavalry regiment on the move. He apparently provided his medical services at a time when it was most needed during the early days of the war. History of the Stonestreet Museum of 19th Century Medicine. This one-room doctor's office was built by Samuel Thomas Stonestreet in 1852 for his son Edward Elisha Stonestreet of Rockville, who had just graduated from the University of Maryland's medical school. Dr. Stonestreet was a practicing country doctor in the Rockville area until his death in 1903. During the fifty-one years of his practice, medical knowledge and technology underwent many radical changes. The Stonestreet Museum contains exhibits that highlight our extensive 19th and early 20th century medical collections including books, instruments and tools, pharmaceutical items, and more. The office was originally situated in the front yard of the Stonestreet family home on East Montgomery Avenue at Monroe St. Some years after the doctor's death the office was moved to the Rockville fairgrounds (now the site of Richard Montgomery High School), and it was thus spared demolition during the city's urban renewal project in the mid 20th century. In 1972, Dr. Stonestreet's office was donated to the Montgomery County Historical Society and moved to the grounds of the Beall-Dawson House. Signed.
