Bright, clean & tight copy, unread, in Fine condition. "James Joyce's younger brother, Professor Stanislaus Joyce, was engaged on this memoir at the time of his death in 1955. It is therefore uncompleted, and ends at 1903; but, as it stands, it gives a very full account of the brothers' boyhood and youth in Ireland that could have been written by no-one else and suggests the relationship between them that continued in Trieste until the First World War. [] Stanislaus Joyce perceived his brother's genius very early and as long as they were together observed and admired him--and saved him as far as possible from the results of his excesses. In spite of the acute differences between them Stanislaus found himself permanently bound to James, and his account of their family life in Dublin is moving and revealing, though often told in bitterness. But Stanislaus was a man of character and never a mere shadow. [] T. S. It is a great pity that Stanislaus' projected study of James' maturity, when the two were so closely identified and shared so much together, was never completed. T. S.
