The story of the Proms, the music of the Proms: this book deals with both in some detail. It covers a period of some eighty-five years - from their inauguration at Queen's Hall in 1895 to the end of the 1970s - through the changes and chances of two world wars, through various financial crises, and since 1927 in the more or less calm harbour of BBC sponsorship. These Promenade Concerts have been described as the grreatest music festival in the world. The author puts them in perspective and assesses their musical content and the impact and achievement of the major figures who have been associated with them: Sir Henry Wood, Robert Newman, Sir Adrian Boult, Sir Malcolm Sargent, Sir William Glock, and many others. As a member of the BBC music staff for about thirty years, and with the help of BBC archive material going back to 1927, he has been able to see the development of the Proms in more recent times 'from the inside', but his viewpoint is always an independent one. Regular 'Prommers' have help by answering a questionnaire, and many lighter moments, including some memorable examples of Prommers' wit in the speaking-choruses from the arena, are included. Detailed appendices include lists of first performances, orchestras and conductors, and a selection of typical programmes and repertoires. There are over fifty illustrations.
