Stephen Hunter (born March 25, 1946) is an American novelist, essayist, and film critic. After graduating from Northwestern in 1968 with a degree in journalism, he joined The Baltimore Sun in 1971. He became its film critic in 1982, he held moved to The Washington Post as film critic in 1997. In 1998 Hunter won the American Society of Newspaper Editors Distinguished Writing Award and in 2003 the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. Hunter's novels include Point of Impact, Black Light and Time to Hunt, which form a trilogy featuring sniper Bob "the Nailer" Swagger. The story of Bob Lee Swagger continued with The 47th Samurai, Night of Thunder, I, Sniper, Dead Zero, The Third Bullet, Sniper's Honor and G-Man. Hunter has written three nonfiction books: Violent Screen: A Critic's 13 Years on the Front Lines of Movie Mayhem, a collection of essays from his time at The Sun; American Gunfight, an examination of the November 1, 1950, assassination attempt on Harry S. Truman at Blair House in Washington, D.C.; and Now Playing at the Valencia, a collection of pieces from The Washington Post. The combination of exciting action, technical lore. and skilled plot manipulation places this novel far ahead of others in its field. The tension of this thriller never lets up. Derived from a Kirkus review: Hunter returns to the sniper theme that made The Master Sniper a mesmerizing suspense debut. This is his best since then. Can one praise him for a fearless, warts-and-all rounded portrait of a master sniper from Arkansas, and even perhaps call Bob Lee Swagger a riveting hero bearing an unbearable burden?
