Our rooms are littered with them--at least my study is as I finish writing this. It is hard to remember that books are a relatively recent invention, barely five centuries old. Before Gutenberg printed the Bible from movable type in 1456, most of our forebears worked with handwritten manuscripts, a far different medium. Even with printing, books did not become widely available until the invention of a machine that manufactured paper, early in the nineteenth century'. A whole new way of studying the Bible developed in conjunction with this new technology. The first printed Greek edition of the New Testament was published by Erasmus of Rotterdam in 1516, under the title Novum Instrumentum, meaning a new instrument. Other study books soon followed: dictionaries, concordances, lexicons, atlases, commentaries. These new instruments made it possible to analyze the biblical writings in ways never before possible. They have allowed us to move closer to their original contexts and meanings than has been possible since the third century.
