Hardback. Zustand: Fair. The Boston Red Sox's loss to the New York Yankees in the 2003 playoffs has been called the game of the century, evidence that the rivalry between the Red Sox and the Yankees was hotter than ever. In the wake of that defeat, author and Boston Globe sports columnist Dan Shaughnessy updated his bewitching story of the curse that laid over the Red Sox after they sold Babe Ruth to the hated Yankees in 1920. Here he sheds light on classic Sox debacles from the years before they broke the curse and finally reached the World Championship again--from Johnny Pesky's so-called hesitation throw to the horrifying dribbler that slithered between Bill Buckner's legs. Lively and filled with anecdotes, this is baseball folklore at its best.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: fine. First edition. First edition/printing. Fine (with gift inscription front free endpaper) in bright, crisp dust jacket. Hardcover. 210 pp. with bibliography. In the early part of the 20th century, the Boston Red Sox were, along with Connie Mack' Philadelphia Athletics, the best team in the American League, winning five World Seies between the first in 1903 and 1918. In 1914 they signed a big left handed pitcher from Baltimore by the name of Babe Ruth. In January of 1920 (maybe or not to help finance the Red Sox owner's Broadway production of "No, No, Nanette!"), they sold Ruth to the New York Yankees. For the rest of the 20th century, the Yankees won 22 World Series and the Red Sox none, prompting the Beantown faithful's belief that their franchise was cursed. For a good portionnof that time, they were simply not a very good ballclub but there were some particularly notable horror stories along the way---Bucky Dent's 1978 playoff home run, the ground ball through Bill Buckner's legs in the '86 Series, Johnny Pesky's hesitation throw home in the '46 Series. The author chronicles them all with authority and old-fashioned New England humor.…
