Ter Hark traces Popper's early writings--before he emerged as a philosopher--and demonstrates that his celebrated method of trial and error, his falsificationism, and his evolutionary theory of knowledge are all deeply rooted in the cognitive psychology of Otto Selz, whose theory of problem solving and schematic anticipation laid foundational groundwork for modern cognitive science. Moving through the Würzburg School, the progressive educational reform movement in Vienna, the child psychology of Karl Bühler, and the Denkpsychologie tradition, the book reconstructs the rich psychological milieu in which Popper's thought first took shape.
