Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 8vo (23.5 cm), XVI, 233 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (minor shelf-wear). A revisionist study of the intellectual origins of Karl Popper's philosophy of science, arguing that the standard account of Popper's development significantly underestimates his debt to early twentieth-century German… psychology. Ter Hark traces Popper's early writings--before he emerged as a philosopher--and demonstrates that his celebrated method of trial and error, his falsificationism, and his evolutionary theory of knowledge are all deeply rooted in the cognitive psychology of Otto Selz, whose theory of problem solving and schematic anticipation laid foundational groundwork for modern cognitive science. Moving through the Würzburg School, the progressive educational reform movement in Vienna, the child psychology of Karl Bühler, and the Denkpsychologie tradition, the book reconstructs the rich psychological milieu in which Popper's thought first took shape. Ter Hark then traces how Selz's concepts--the theory of the searchlight, schematic anticipations, trying-out behaviour--were transformed into Popper's philosophical positions, before turning to Popper's later engagement with the mind-body problem, his battle against physicalism, and the question of whether his mature position amounted to a form of Cartesian pluralism. A scholarly and carefully documented work of intellectual history that substantially enriches our understanding of Popper's philosophical achievement.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book is about Karl Popper's early writings before he began his career as a philosopher. The purpose of the book is to demonstrate that Popper's philosophy of science, with its emphasis on the method of trial and error, is largely based on the psycholog…y of Otto Selz, whose theory of problem solving and scientific discovery laid the foundation for much of contemporary cognitive psychology. By arguing that Popper's famous defence of the method of falsification as well as his elaboration of an evolutionary theory of knowledge are equally indebted to German psychology, Michel ter Hark challenges the received view of the development of Popper's philosophy. The book concludes with a reinterpretation of Popper's theory of the mind-body problem, emphasizing its contemporary relevance.
