Drawing upon an exceptionally large corpus of securely dated manuscripts--particularly the evidence assembled in the Catalogues of Dated Manuscripts--Derolez provides a systematic survey of the evolution and regional varieties of Gothic script between c.1100 and c.1530. The ten chapters examine the medieval manuscript book; the Carolingian heritage; Praegothica; Northern Textualis; Southern Textualis and Semitextualis (with separate treatment of Italy, Iberia, southern France, and other regions); cursive scripts in general; Cursiva Antiquior, including Anglicana; Cursiva; Hybrida and Semihybrida; and Gothico-Antiqua together with scripts falling outside the expanded Lieftinck framework.
