Hardback. Zustand: Good. Mr Noon is a sardonic tale about the amorous adventures of Gilbert Noon, a young schoolmaster in Lawrence's home county of Nottinghamshire who gets entangled with a girl, loses his job, and decides to leave the country to escape the narrow provincial middle-class morality. It was first known as a long story posthumously published in A Modern Lover (1934) and collected in the volume called Phoenix II (1968). Lawrence in fact wrote a long continuation of the novel, but the manuscript disappeared for many years. The Cambridge edition brought the two parts together for the first time. It is like a sequel to Sons and Lovers, but much more straightforwardly autobiographical. The publication of the complete work added a new work of major importance to the canon of a great writer, and was widely hailed as a major literary event. …

First edition thus, published in this edition for the first time with Lawrence's continuation of the novel. With three text maps at the back of the book, showing: Map 1. Eastwood area, 1912; Map 2. Rhineland, 1912; Map 3. Tyrol, 1912. ***Near fine in scarlet cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked. No bumps or creases. Corners sharp. Top of page block just lightly foxed. No reading lean. Spine tight. Internally near fine with no inscriptions. No creases or tears. It is a sardonic tale about the amorous adventures of Gilbert Noon, a young schoolmaster in Lawrence's home county of Nottinghamshire who gets entangled with a girl, loses his job, and decides to leave the country to escape the narrow world of provincial middle-class morality. ***Lawrence wrote a long continuation of the novel, but it was not published, and the manuscript disappeared for many years. It has now been found, and the whole novel is here published for the first time. ***Gilbert Noon in this second part becomes one of Lawrence's fictional alter egos. He travels to Germany, as Lawrence did in 1912, where he falls in love with a married woman who is obviously modelled on Frieda Lawrence; in the face of family opposition he elopes with her to the Bavarian Tyrol, and they travel to Italy. It is like a sequel to "Sons and Lovers", but much more straightforwardly autobiographical. It is brilliant and vivid in Lawrence's best vein, but reveals profound conflicts and self-questioning in him. It is unfinished - since the life it was recording was still being lived - and it could hardly be published in Lawrence's lifetime because it revealed too much, even for him. Its publication now adds a new work of major importance to the canon of a great writer.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A near fine copy of this posthumously published last novel by D. H. Lawrence. A nice edition with a detailed section of explanatory notes. Uncommon with the promotional wraparound band intact. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…
