Histories of anthropology tend to summarise particular authors' intellectual differ…ences, but, as Marc Aug? argues in this book, these differences may in fact be intrinsically derived from intellectual divisions within anthropology as obvious as they are irreconcilable. Social institutions, no matter how specific to a particular culture they may seem, bring into play a more general symbolism, traces of which may also be found in other cultures. The anthropologist, therefore, can be concerned as much with the logic of an institution and the unconscious of its practices (what it symbolises) as with its processes of integration and the internal link between its different modalities of organisation (the manner in which it functions). But it is difficult to pursue the two kinds of analysis simultaneously, and the classical anthropologists, as well as many current writers, have tended to focus on one at the expense of the other.
