Social institutions, no matter how specific to a particular culture they may seem, bring into play a more general symbolism, traces of which may also be found in other cultures. The anthropologist, therefore, can be concerned as much with the logic of an institution and the unconscious of its practices (what it symbolises) as with its processes of integration and the internal link between its different modalities of organisation (the manner in which it functions).
