Hawking's LARGE SCALE STRUCTURE OF SPACE-TIME discusses the implication of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity on the formation of black holes (a lifelong obsession for Hawking) as well as the Big Bang. The first title in the now long-running Cambridge Monographs on Mathematical Physics series and called "a masterpiece" on publication (Bryce Dewitt), the book has gone through numerous editions, including one to honor its 50th anniversary in 2023. This copy comes from the collection of physicist Freydoon Mansouri (1936-2003), whose work on string theory was foundational to that field and who later helped formulate the MacDowell-Mansouri action, used to derive Einstein's field equations of general relativity. A classic and hugely influential text with significant provenance linking two important physicists. 8.75'' x 5.75''. Original full blue cloth with spine titles stamped in silver.
