About the book >.>.> The first treatment of thermodynamics which a student of physics gets nowadays is likely to be given in an early year at the university, and to be concerned more with the descriptive aspect of the subject than with its systematic application to a variety of problems. If in a later year he attends a more thorough course it will probably be quite brief, on account of the pressure of other subjects which nowa- days rightly rank as of greater urgency, and he cannot normally be expected to supplement his meagre ration of lectures by protracted study of the standard monographs. It is this situation which I have kept in mind in writing a short account of the fundamental ideas of thermodynamics, and to keep it short I have deliberately excluded details of experimental methods and multiplicity of illustrative examples. In consequence this is probably not a suitable text-book for the beginner, but I hope the more advanced student will find here a statement of the aims and techniques, which will illuminate.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The laws of thermodynamics are amongst the most assured and wide-ranging of all scientific laws. They do not pretend to explain any observation in molecular terms but, by showing the necessary relationships between different physical properties, they reduce otherwise disconnected results to compact order, and predict new effects. This classic title, first published in 1957, is a systematic exposition of principles, with examples of applications, especially to changes of places and the conditions for stability. In all this entropy is a key concept.
