Galen Avery Rowell (August 23, 1940 - August 11, 2002) was a wilderness photographer, adventure photojournalist and climber. He became a full-time photographer in 1972. Within a year, he had completed his first major assignment, a cover story for National Geographic and thus Rowell got his start. He pioneered a new kind of photography in which he was not merely an observer, but considered himself a participant in the scenes that he photographed. He won the Ansel Adams Award for Conservation Photography in 1984. Rowell was also a highly regarded writer, publishing numerous magazine articles and eighteen books in his lifetime. His In the Throne Room of the Mountain Gods about the history of mountaineering on K2 (1977) is considered a classic of mountaineering literature. He used 35 mm Nikon cameras and lenses almost exclusively for their reliability and portability. Rowell conceived a technical approach of extending the dynamic range to be captured on film. He developed a set of graduated neutral density filters and had them produced by Singh-Ray, a filter manufacturer. They were sold under his name and became a standard for dealing with high contrast scenes. Galen Rowell also mastered the technique of using balanced fill flash which allowed him to lighten the deepest shadows in a subtle way to match the relatively narrow dynamic range of color reversal film. The harsh beauty of the polar regions has long captured the imagination of adventurers of every sort; explorers, scientists, world travelers, and those who are simply curious about these mysterious places. The forbidding terrain and exotic wildlife appeal to one's sense of wonder, and while many think the two poles are similar, the Arctic and Antarctic are vastly different. In his photographic exhibition Poles Apart, Galen Rowell highlights these contrasts, using side-by-side photographs to illustrate the differences. Derived from a review by Danny Yee found on the Internet: Poles Apart is a collection of photographs from the Arctic and Antarctic. Part one consists of 37 pairs of contrasted photos - one from each region - on facing pages. Part two contains 24 two page photo-essays on particular areas and topics. The photographs themselves are simply stunning. They are both visually impressive and well presented as a collection: Rowell's selection has a good balance between scenery (mountains, ice, tundra), wildlife (with some really spectacular "action" shots), people (scientists, native inhabitants of the Arctic, mountain climbers), and human habitations and equipment (historic huts, scientific research stations, pollution). His stated aim is to make the photographs accessible by balancing the unfamiliar with the familiar, and I think he has succeeded admirably. Some may feel cheated by the abundance of white-space - the photos occupy just half of each page - but in this case the white framing is both appropriate and effective (and it's always nice not to have to turn the page to find captions). Part three contains short essays on each of the photographs in parts one and two, providing rather eclectic snippets of background information.
