People imagined this world as a tiny boat adrift on a vast sea or a broad river over whose flow the passengers in the boat had no control. Life in the floati…ng world was a matter, first, of acceptance: acceptance of the calm and the storm, of the inevitability of change, like weather that no person could affect or coerce. As a popular art form, ukiyo-e inevitably reflected both the abiding realities and the slightest shifts in the country's cultural climate. From the mid-1600s (when the first monochrome prints were made) to 1859, Japan effectively sealed itself from foreig influence, enjoying a rare isolation and domestic stability. The prints of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries convey a sense of peace. The quality becomes more palpable, perhaps, in contrast to later prints that testify to the fracture and disintegrstion of a stable world with the eruption of civil war and the reopening of contact with the West in the second half of the nineteenth century. The woodblock prints were published the cities, principally Edo, then the larg city in the world. Visitors bought them idly as gifts and souvenirs and carried them to the remotest corners of the country.
