These essays explore the meaning and history of eclecticism in the context of ancient philosophy and seek to provide more accurate descriptions of the work of such philosophers as Cicero, Philo of Alexandria, Plutarch, and the Neopythagoreans. They explore the distinctive character of intellectual enquiry at this timethe criterion of truth, the creative imagination, and the antecedents of our modern notion of the will. Collectively, these essays serve to dismiss the term eclecticism in its perjorative sense as a characterization of the philosophy of this period.
