It is grounded in technical scholarship, to which it constantly refers and is intended to contribute, and I hope that even Homeric specialists will find ideas and interpretations to interest them. I have tried to present clearly what seem to me the most valuable results of modern research and criticism of the Iliad while setting forth my own views. My goal has been to interpret the poem as much as possible on its own mythological, religious, ethical, and artistic terms. The topics and problems I focus on are those that have arisen most often and most insistently when I have taught the poem, in translation and in the original, as I have done every year since 1968. This book is a literary study of the Iliad. I have not discussed historical, archaeologoical, or even linguistic questions except where they are directly relevant to literary interpretation. Throughout I have emphasized what is thematically, ethically, and artistically distinctive in the Iliad in contrast to the conventions of the poetic tradition of which it is an end product. For example, I try to show how the Iliad transforms conventional attitudes toward the gods, heroism, and immortality in accordance with its own thematic emphasis on mortality and on the limitations and opportunities of the human condition. Sometimes it is clear that the poem alludes to traditional mythology and heroic values, with which it is not itself primarily concerned, in order to bring out by contrast its own characteristic themes. Often it invites readers to consider ironically and critically contradictions in the traditional heroism and heroic world which it depicts. In most cases what is distinctive about the poem in relation to its own tradition is also what has always seemed to its readers especially moving and stimulating. For this reason I have been able to write both for scholars and for non-specialist readers. No one is likely to read all that has been written about the Iliad. Every Homeric scholar finds some books and articles more helpful and more to his or her taste than others. This is partly a matter of training and influence by one's teachers, but also a question of individual temperament and susceptibility to the approaches to literature that are current when one is thinking and writing. I have been most strongly influenced by and have tried to combine the approaches of the two most fruitful "schools" of modern Homeric scholarship: the (chiefly Anglo-American) study of Homer as a traditional oral poet, which began with the work of Milman Parry, and the "Neo-Analysis" originated by Johannes Th. Kakridis and exemplified by the work of such German students of the poem as Karl Reinhardt and Wolfgang Schadewaldt. The Iliad books of E. T. Owen and of Cedric Whitman, which I read when I first studied the Iliad in Greek, have been abiding influences. I have learned a great deal, as well, from the more recent books by Michael Nagler, James Redfield, and Gregory Nagy, although it will be obvious that my approach and interpretations are significantly different from theirs. I have cited frequently these and other works of Homeric scholarship in order both to acknowledge my intellectual debts and to suggest to readers where they can learn more about particular topics or lines of interpretation.
