"Della Portas play of passion, ribaldry, and aristocratic rivalry is a masterpiece by the finest Italian comic playwright of the late cin-quecento. Renaissance drama was launched early in Italy in a profusion of works by Ariosto and Machiavellis generation. By the time of Shakespeare and Lope de Vega, Italian comedy had achieved a complexity of form and content that combined classical technique with experimental mixtures of commedia dellarte style and tragic motifs, realism and symbolism, lyric word and theatrical gesture. Few Italian comedies of the late Renaissance are available in modern editions, and almost none have been translated into English. Based on the editio princeps of 1601, this is the first annotated critical edition of Gli duoi fratelli rivali. A facing-page English translation accompanies the Italian text. In her introductory essay, Professor Clubb examines the historical and theoretical context in which Renaissance comedy matured and explores the idea of an international dramaturgy by comparing Della Portas play with Shakespeares contemporary treatment of the same story in Much Ado about Nothing."
