This work is based on years of intensive research, selection, and translation in Europe and in the United States. The text traces Monet's career from a brief notice about the young artist's entries in the Salon of 1865, and uses contemporary eyes in reviews, articles, and interviews with Monet himself. Relevant writings by Proust, Zola, Maupassant, Mallarme, and Clemenceau were consulted. Modern interpretations by art historian WIlliam Seits and critic Clement Greenberg conclude the work.
