In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. By the mid 1800s, the Pre-Raphaelites were the most talked about movement in contemporary cuture. Now, 150 years later, the popularity of leading (male) exponents such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones and John Everett Millais is greater than ever, while the crucial role played by women artists has largely been forgotten. This publication brings together paintings, drawings, photographs and more to show how women contributed to the pre-Raphaelite movement. The artists include Barbara Bodichon, Anna Howitt, Elizabeth Siddal, Rebecca Solomon, Emma Sandys, Julia Margaret Cameron, Lucy and Catherine Madox Brown, Marie Spartali Stillman, Francesca Alexander, Evelyn De Morgan, Marianne Stokes and Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale. Many works are reproduced and documented in the book in order to illuminate a significant chapter in the neglected history of women artists. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

About the book >.>.> Pre-Raphaelitism broke upon the British art world at the Royal Academy exhibitions of 1849 and 1850. An avant-garde movement aiming to regenerate fine art, it soon became the most talked-about feature of contemporary culture, exciting both enthusiasm and hostility. From the "visionary vanities of half a dozen boys" - as the poet and painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti later described the original impulse behind the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood - it was promoted by critic John Ruskin to become a nation-wide influence available to artists over the next half-century. Its main figures have been seen to be, firstly, Rossetti, William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. Their personal example spread the word amongst their acquaintances and their exhibition appearances attracted recruits from around the country, while Ruskin enthusiasts needed no further encouragement to join up. Thus Pre-Raphaelitism rapidly became an important ingredient in the work of artists such as Anna Mary Howitt, Barbara Leigh Smith (later Bodichon), J.
