Established in 1760 under the guidance of the young Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf, the factory helped develop French expertise in textile printing after restrictions on printed cottons were lifted. Its output ranged far beyond the copper-plate fabrics commonly associated with toile de Jouy. | The book presents the factory's varied designs and production techniques, including finely engraved prints in red or blue featuring pastoral scenes and Neo-classical motifs, as well as thousands of multicoloured wood-block patterns. These include bold chintzes and sprigged muslins, whose designs had received little definite study before Josette Bredif's research.
