Among many innovations it contained the principles for solving both cubic and biquadratic equations, giving the roots of expressions formed by radicals, in a manner similar to the method which had been known for equations of the second degree since ancient times. Although Cardano did not claim these innovations as entirely original with him, he was able to build upon them to create his own general theory embracing all possible cases.
